Reena's Art Mentorship Program Creates Masterpieces and Self-Confidence
But is it art?
Many of the individuals supported by Reena have been rolling up their sleeves lately to answer the age-old question posed by Rudyard Kipling, “But is it art?”
These men and women have been taking part in one of Reena’s most popular programs, the Art Mentorship Program, and judging by the results, this is most definitely art.
This unique and innovative initiative helps participants build self-confidence, a skill that can be transferred to other aspects of their lives.
Participants take great pride in their artwork - be it portraits, abstracts, landscapes, patterns, as well as still-life drawings and sculptures.
“The participants had great enthusiasm for learning and creating every single week,” says Amanda Wand, artist and instructor. “Every month they are given a new medium to work with, instruction on how to use it, and the chance to create original works of art. In doing so, they can express their individuality while honing their artistic skills.”
“I like Art Mentorship because when I do art, it relaxes me. I also feel creative expressing myself through art." -Elyse, Reena Artist
These budding artists displayed their unique works of art at the Art Mentorship Exhibition on June 19th at the Schwartz Reisman Centre. Beaming with pride and self-confidence and proud of their artistic endeavors, participants were surrounded by family members, friends, staff, volunteers and local leaders who were kvelling when seeing the beautiful and imaginative works of arts created by Reena artists.
City of Vaughan Mayor, His Worship Steven Del Duca, City of Vaughan Ward 4 Councillor, Chris Ainsworth and City of Richmond Hill Mayor, His Worship David West, toured the exhibition and took the time from their busy schedules to speak with each artist.
And if that wasn’t enough, Mayor Del Duca and Councillor Ainsworth addressed the crowd before generously presenting Reena Foundation with a $15,000 donation from the Spirit of Generosity Fund. This generous donation will help ensure that this and other similar Reena initiatives continue, improving the lives of Reena artists for years to come.
