Chesed Day brightens lives
Shedding light on Toronto’s Jewish community
As we continue to struggle with the challenges of Covid-19 and the fears and frustrations of today’s “new world”, we are all – perhaps more than ever – in need of some good old fashioned human kindness.
On Tuesday, December 13th, grade 10 students from Ulpana Orot Girls School provided that kindness and warmth by hosting Chesed Day, where, partnering with Reena Foundation, Yachad Toronto and Bikur Cholim Toronto, the students came together to improve and brighten lives within Toronto’s Jewish community.
Chesed, a vital Jewish value, means giving oneself fully, with love and compassion.
“We believe that chesed is a core value of our school,” explained Ilana Lazar, Head of Chesed at Ulpana Orot Girls School. “The Torah places value on acts of chesed and we apply that to our everyday lives at Ulpana. Chesed goes beyond just learning to do good things, but is actively involving oneself to fulfill those good deeds.”
“Reena plays a key role in the Jewish community and we wanted to give back to them.”
And fulfill good deeds they did as the girls did much more than just talk the talk. They walked the walk making tzedekah boxes for Reena Foundation, creating posters for Yachad and packing cutlery for Bikur Cholim.
“Chesed is an important aspect of our school and comes naturally to our students,” says Ilana. “The smiles and joy on their faces when doing acts of chesed brightens up our entire school.”
